Jim Harvey reviews Vegas 5 from Sony Pictures

Jim Harvey reviews Vegas 5 from Sony Pictures: "so many new features and enhanced the existing ones that for all intents and purposes, VEGAS 5.0 is a completely new program."

This is a good review of the sony vegas product.
I've started to try to use it but since it is my first NLE
I'm taking it step by step, but anyway I'm glad I read it.

Spitzer Gets on Sony BMG's Case: "Spitzer Gets on Sony BMG's Case
New York's Attorney General has turned his attention to Sony BMG's copyright-protection fiasco

" Sony BMG Music Entertainment is getting a lot of unwanted attention for its use of copyright-protection software that left CD users open to computer viruses. It began with the bloggers, who shed light on the matter, and has spread to the scads of consumers who have used the Internet to urge a boycott of Sony BMG CD's."

According to bussines week the company , the artists and the distributors are all paying the price of one of the worst copy protection, cutomer relations fiascoes of the last 20 years.

This is for sony the equivalent of the exxon valdez and I for one plan to join the many people who will rejoice when they lose their case in Texas and NY and end up paying through the nose to protect their content.
Is piracy a real and big enough problem?

Is this the best way to protect against piracy?
Obviously not.

Bad things happend to bad companies that treat their customers badly.

Wired News: Boycott Sony: "Boycott Sony

02:00 AM Nov. 14, 2005 PT

After weeks of criticism, Sony has finally agreed to temporarily stand down on an abusive and likely illegal copy restriction practice. Hold the applause.

On Friday, the world's second-biggest record label pledged to temporarily stop making CDs that leave computers vulnerable to security breaches. This is a step in the right direction, but it does not go nearly far enough toward correcting a serious ethical lapse. In fact, it is proof positive that Sony is unworthy of our trust or our business."

Sony is a crappy company that makes crappy products based on crappy bushiness and crappy ethical principles.
therefore that's what they deserve from their customers, crap.
I, For one will be boycot Sony Music from now on.

And I will never under any circumstance suggest that you do something illegal, BUT If I were to hear that someone has ripped the entire Sony Catalog and posted it for free on the neet would not be:
a) Surprised and/or
b) Disgusted.

Crappy companies deserve crappy treatment, I hope they go under and are purchase by Google.

Wired News: Evolutionists Are Wrong!: "he Kansas Board of Education"
The Kansas board of education is a bunch of redneck, beer guzzling, sister screwing hicks that want to impose their world view on others and that really pisses me of. I wish they could be submerged in a sewage plant laggon until the get an acute case of apoxia.
Wired News: Evolutionists Are Wrong!: "I agree with the vast majority of scientists who believe that evolution is the strongest and most comprehensive explanation for the diversity of life on Earth. I also agree with the vast majority of scientists who think that intelligent design, the theory that the complexity of life must be derived at least in part from a supernatural intelligence, is junk. I support the two scientific organizations in their mission of teaching legitimate theory, rejecting specious sermonizing in schools, and promoting the scientific method for studying observable phenomena."

Wired News: The Cover-Up Is the Crime: "Sony BMG is facing a cacophony of criticism this week following the revelation that some of its CDs are packed with special copy-protection software that conceals itself with an advanced hacker cloaking technique. We think the company is getting off easy"

Sony must rot in hell and die for installing crapware on the computer of the poor people that still purchase their music on CDs.

I would not encourage anybody to break the law but I would be of the general opinion that morally speaking ripping all the music from all the sony Cd's and posting the on line for free does not seem to be half as evil as what the company is doing.

* seems to be turned slightly to its right. Perhaps, if you believe in such things, it was meant to be seen a few seconds later....Perhaps it was seen a few seconds later by someone else!

Congressman Tom Delay: "
Dear Friend,
As you probably know, the very partisan Travis County D.A. recently manufactured an indictment against me that is based on charges from the 2002 Texas State House elections.
These charges are groundless and false. I am completely innocent."

This fucking crook that is tom Delay is not only guilty of the charges on the indictment but also of being a bad person and a scoundrel and a crook.

However since that is the criteria that the AMERICAN people used to choose the president and the vice president I do not think that there's any hope whatsoever that justice will be made.

Gear Factor: "Here Comes the VideoPod
Topic: Media Players
I don't think this was quite the device many iPod nuts were hoping for, but the video-playing iPod is here. Announced just minutes ago at a special press conference, the new iPod is more or less an iPod Photo with movie-playing software built in.

Lest I sell this thing short, it's worth noting that there are other enhancements to the latest player from Apple. Selling for $399, the 60GB version has a 2.5-inch color screen, a thinner case than its comparable predecessor, and a purported 20-hour battery life. Plug this thing into your TV via S-Video, and you can play back digital recordings on the big screen. Apple claims you can store up to 2,000 music videos on this thing, but that sounds like a pretty vague measurement of capacity. How many episodes of Surface is that?"
Basically this is a crapy product that will be sold to hard core geeks.
BUT this is the begining of the online video distribution industry.

"Los Voladores de Papantla" the papantla flyers , are Totonac Indians performing an ancient fertility ceremony. As they slowly descend to earth, the 13 revolutions made by the four flyers equal the 52-year span of the Aztec century. The flyers represent earth, water, fire and air, and the interweaving of these four elements symbolizes the creation of new life. A fifth man is left on top, dancing on this tiny nine-inch platform while simultaneously playing both a pre-Columbian flute and drum.

One of the biggest stories on the web right now is the 2 month tale of Jeff Jarvis who was so fed up by the bad service he got for his dell laptop that he switched to a Mac.

BuzzMachine » Blog Archive » Dell’s apologist: "Dell’s apologist
Read More: Dell

I was pretty amazed when I read this from Daniel Gross in Slate on DellÂ’s many problems, including the ones I caused them:

Dell had the bad luck to tick off a very powerful blogger. The company is justly known for its fantastic customer service. But any time you engage in tens of millions of customer contacts, there are bound to be errors. It was Dell’s misfortune that one of those errors affected a person with a huge megaphone, blogger Jeff Jarvis. JarvisÂ’ blow-by-blow account of his Dell hell has become an Internet phenomenon.

I was going to reply but Scott Rosenberg at Salon said it best:

Sorry, I donÂ’t buy it. Set aside the idea that Dell is “justly known” for great service. Known to whom? This sounds like boilerplate from an analystÂ’s report or the companyÂ’s own marketing literature. I'’ve never bought a Dell computer. But in my circles and reading — "an admittedly totally subjective smattering of hearsay", but what else does "“known for" mean? Dell is known for being a giant corporation that hands over its customer service to bored, ill-treated, underpaid people desperate to move on to better jobs.

End Game: "End Game

What happens when war isn't winnable?

by Barry Eisler

I've been thinking about what happens when a society goes to war for a limited objective but then comes to face what seems to be an unlimited cost.

The more blood and treasure a society spends on such a war, the harder it becomes to acknowledge that it can't be won. After spending so much, a retreat would be painful: The society would have to acknowledge that the entire enterprise — the lives lost, the money spent — was a waste (worse than a waste, really, because of opportunity costs and unintended consequences).

Any society would want to avoid the pain inherent in such acknowledgment. It would prefer to believe there is still some chance of winning. If victory is possible, even if securing it turns out to be costlier than first believed, at least the society would have something to show for what it paid."

You can expect then phantomm charges to appear on your credit card, calls for “confirming orders” And standard items not included on (like the battery for a video camera). Call them if feel you need to waste your money, your time or both..

The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top window always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in the bottom window depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle mode youll see the handles that the process selected in the top window has opened; if Process Explorer is in DLL mode youll see the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded. Process Explorer also has a powerful search capability that will quickly show you which processes have particular handles opened or DLLs loaded. "

In response to a caller on his radio show, Fox News host Bill O'Reilly falsely claimed that he 'never said the pope was senile.' O'Reilly blamed the caller's 'propaganda' first on the conservative Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, then on Media Matters for America. To date, Media Matters has documented only one person calling the pope 'senile' -- discredited Unfit for Command author Jerome R. Corsi.

International News Article | Reuters.com: "Mexico City's leftist mayor lost a vote on Friday that could derail his presidential bid in 2006 when a legislative committee recommended Congress strip him of his immunity to face contempt of court charges.

The committee voted 3-1 against Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who has decried the charges as a politically motivated bid to oust him from the race in which he is the front-runner.

Lopez Obrador will be forbidden from running if found guilty in the case involving a land expropriation dispute in the capital. The lower house is expected to vote on stripping his immunity in coming days.

'This is a coup against the residents of Mexico City,' said Horacio Duarte, a legislator for Lopez Obrador's Party of the Democratic Revolution who cast the dissenting vote in the mayor's favor on the committee."

Micro Persuasion: Google May Launch UPC Code Autolinks: "Google May Launch UPC Code Autolinks"

Since Brevity is a virtue I'll go to the main points of David Sims Post.

And it is maintained throughout, IF you want this information to be linked you have to Install the
Google toolbar yourself (Nobody has said that it installs by itself so far) and THEN if you see an address, FedEx number or ISBN code that you might be interested in you have to click on the auto-link function.
the main test FOR ME would be:
Is it useful? From my point of view the answer is yes
Does it change the information of the page visited
in a way that I think detracts from the integrity of that page? this is clearly not the case
If you do not agree to the privacy policy of the tool
then do not use it by any means. or are you saying that the private policy as stated by Google is fraudulent?
Again i think not.

The policies that apply to government sites regarding user privacy have nothing to do with whatever software they have installed on their machines, for example if somebody has gator or bonzi buddy or any other of a number of really nefarious crap-ware and they open your cancer research page and they get a million pop ups for the "CANCER miracle pill!!" (C) does it mean that you're liable. Any student will tell you that that is not the case.

this is something that is very, very subjective
I'm sure that the tool is designed with usability in mind. If it is useful to a vast majority of its users then they're reading the "needs" of the user base in a correct fashion.
And regarding respect for others people knowledge if in your mountains of information I have something that i can or want to look up further that does not mean i do not respect your opinion.

Again you're talking about a tool that is installed and used voluntarily by the user. No about something that creepily appears out of nowhere when you are researching loan applications, or diseases (see gator reference above)

I think this is more based on gut feeling than on fact if you're providing the information for a number of locations for getting federal grants and I click on the toolbar to get a map of the one nearest me is that really "Penalizing" your site?

This is your opinion and i respect it.
Same Here.

O here i think it is , we've had a number of companies doing this for years in a much more nefarious fashion but the high profile of the Google toolbar makes it a point of discussion.

According to Ed Grossman on Queue when selecting tools we must "take an Aristotelian (as opposed to platonic) approach" this is a tool like any other tool and tools can be used for evil or good (sometimes on purpose sometimes by the use that you make of said tool)

In conclusion these are some of the consequences of disruptive technologies when they change the way we assume things should work.

So lets make sure that they work for the better good

Has the blog backlash begun? | News.blog | CNET News.com: "Has the blog backlash begun?
Michael Wolff: I even hate saying the word blog. I hate being forced to say the word blog. "

When you really do not have anything to say take an inflamatory statement from someone as clueless as you and stick it into your blog.

This approach to blogging is called throw everything at the wall and see what sticks there. And I use it quite often . thank you.

Micro Persuasion: Google May Launch UPC Code Autolinks:
REGARDING STEVE REUBELS BLOG opinion on Google toolbar

"I enjoy reading your blog.
However i must disagree with the position that you've taken in the case of the auto link feature of the Google toolbar.
First of all it is a program that is installed on my computer with my authorization and that increases the usability of the sites that I visit when I want to in the way that I want to.
It is not something that comes integrated with the browser and therefore is a default setting for all users of said browser.
It can be easily avoided by the publisher of a web site, either by using a small script or by linking the autolink information on your web site.
Since I use the web in my capacity of Distribution Manager for a major company some (if not all) of the features of this toolbar are useful to me and once the toolbar becomes mature enough the other mayor sites (i.e. MSN and/or yahoo) will come up with something similar to it.

I've heard of many people (including yourself) have taken on this debate providing opinions as facts, why there is not a similar debate going on about top text and Ezula ( Two similar technologies distributed by gator Corporation).
Therefore I would like to post some facts. An see if you at least agree with me on one or several of them.
1.- this is not a new technology that has never been tried before (i.e. Microsoft, top text, et al).
2.- This technology only applies to the Users of the google toolbar, and then to those who choose to enable it. (i.e you must click on the button on the toolbar)
3.- If this technology was not provided by Google we would not even be having this discussion.
4.- This is still in beta (admitedly a HUGE beta) and therefore the technology is still in a state of flux.
5.- Finally, as in everything related to the web the hot topic of the day wi"

Google Toolbar's AutoLink & The Need For Opt-Out

Dany Sullivan Has peas in the brain, as charles cooper mentioned regarding the autolink feature from the google toolbar "....The feature is so arcane it will likely only attract bored reporters and the severely anal retentive...." where dany falls I think is somewhere in between.

Autolink is useful and it works and if you do not want it you don't install the google toolbar, as simple as that if you have information that you don't want to link to something else LINK IT YOURSELF. And problem solved.

SplashData - Virtual Wallet Applications for Mobile Devices
If I had a photo capable PDa or SmartPhone Maybe I would be interested in this application, what i think is crappy is that asimple picture app is called "Lifestyle Application" which is a name that i find as meaningful as "new and Improved"and also irritating. So please do not use the "Lifestyle Application" of this site as it is basically crap and you can get something better somewhere else. and cheaper also!
